Paper 1: Early Buddhism - Basic Doctrines
This paper will be mainly based on the discourses of the Sutta Pitaka with emphasis on Dependent Origination, Four Noble Truths, The three characteristics of life, The Noble Eight Fold Path, Five precepts, Ethics, Kamma and Rebirth, and Nibbana.
Paper 2: Pali (Optional)
Main emphasis is on Citta and Puppha Vagga of Dhammapada, translation from Pali to English and simple Pali terms.
Paper 3: Buddhist Social Dimensions
This paper aims to investigate the relationship between early Buddhism and the society, Supremacy of Man, Buddhist Economic Policy, Buddhism and Environment, Crime and Punishment, Buddhist Monasticism, and the concept of Good and Bad in Buddhism.
Paper 4: Geographical Expansion of Theravada Buddhism
This paper will cover the first 3 Buddhist councils, Rise & Decline of Buddhism in South India, Buddhism in Sri Lanka, Burma, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos.
Paper 5: Early History of Buddhism up to 3rd BC
The history of Buddhism from the Enlightenment of Siddharta to become the Buddha, till the Buddhist missionary activities launched in the reign of King Asoka, Origin and development of Buddhist Monastery, establishment of Bhikkhu and Bhikkhuni Orders, Emergence of Buddhist schools and their impact on the development of Buddhist thoughts.
Which is the awarding university for the Diploma?
It is the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka. Your diploma is thus recognized throughout the Commonwealth countries.
Are there any pre-requisites to enroll?
As long as you are eighteen years of age at the time of registration, submit 2 passport sized photographs and pay the fees, you are fine. Of course, we will get the Principal of the Buddhist Institute to attest your application.
Who will be the lecturers?
The main lecturers would be Mr. Vijaya Samarawickrama, Sister Loo Mew Ling, Bro Lo Yean Meow etc. They would be assisted by visiting lecturers from time to time.
Are there examinations for this course?
Yes, the examination for the five papers will be held in October next year at the Vihara under the supervision of an invigilator from the Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka.
The five papers are:
- Early Buddhism – Basic Doctrines;
- Buddhist Social Dimensions;
- Geographical Expansion of Theravada Buddhism;
- Early History of Buddhism till 3rd Century BC;
- Pali Qualifying Paper.
Would attendance for the lectures be compulsory?
We would encourage a minimum of 70 attendance for the lectures unless there are compelling reasons for absence.
If I am not staying in KL or Selangor, and traveling cost is prohibitive, can I be exempted from attending the lectures?
We will send you the notes and past year questions for your reference and preparation. However we do recommend attendance of lectures whenever possible to enable your study. We also encourage you to get to know the other students so that perhaps you could exchange additional study notes via emails, etc.
Are reference books needed?
Yes, in any course of study, lectures alone would not be sufficient. Reference books would be very helpful and we have a list of recommended books for each subject. You may purchase these books. These books are also available at the K. Sri Dhammananda Library. We also encourage the students to also have a study group as well.
Are there any additional fees to be paid other than the MYR 1,200?
The fees covers registration, basic notes, tuition and examination fees only. There may be extra expenses incurred like purchasing referral books, exercise books etc..
Would past year examination papers be made available for us to prepare for the examinations?
Most certainly, we have the past year exam questions for students to practice supported by Tutorials.
If I would like to pursue a degree program, can I?
We are also offering the Degree program. The prerequisite is this Diploma in Buddhism. However, if you already have a Diploma in Buddhism, and keen to pursue the Degree program kindly get in touch with us.
Would there be breaks between lectures?
Yes, most certainly.
