Full Moon Puja

September 17, 2024 @ 7:30 pm

Peace comes from within. Do not seek it without.

-Lord Buddha

Each Poya (Full Moon) day commemorates a key event in the life of Lord Buddha or in the history of Buddhism. Binara Poya holds special significance due to its association with the establishment of the Bhikkhuni Sangha, the order of Buddhist nuns.

Historical Background

The primary historical importance of Binara Poya is linked to the establishment of the Bhikkhuni Sangha. According to Buddhist tradition, it was on a Binara Poya day that Mahapajapati Gotami, the Buddha’s aunt and foster mother, was ordained as the first Buddhist nun.

This event marked a pivotal moment in the history of Buddhism, promoting gender equality and offering women the opportunity to pursue spiritual development on par with men.

The establishment of the Bhikkhuni Sangha is a profound testament to the Buddha’s progressive views on inclusivity and spiritual egalitarianism. Despite initial reluctance due to concerns about the stability and longevity of the monastic order, the Buddha consented to the ordination of women after the persistent requests from Mahapajapati Gotami and the intervention of Ananda, one of his closest disciples.

Join us for this special puja.

We look forward to celebrating this auspicious occasion with you,
deepening our understanding and practice of the Buddha’s teachings.
