Full Moon Puja

December 15, 2024 @ 7:30 pm

One who, while himself seeking happiness, oppresses with violence other beings who also desire happiness, will not attain happiness hereafter.

-The Dhammapada 10,131

Unduvap Poya is the last full moon Poya day of the year and commemorates the arrival of Sangamitta Theri in Sri Lanka with a Bo sapling from the sacred Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in India.

Historical Background

Sangamitta Theri, the daughter of Emperor Asoka and sister to Arahant Mahinda, embarked on this pivotal voyage to Sri Lanka, bringing with her the revered Bo sapling.

Accompanied by members of the royal family who had embraced the Buddhist faith, Sangamitta Theri landed in Dambakolapatuna port in Jaffna on an auspicious Unduvap Poya day during the reign of King Devanampiyatissa.

The Bo sapling was ceremoniously planted in the Mahameuna Garden in Anuradhapura, where it took root and flourished.  This initiated the spread of Buddhism and the exchange of cultural knowledge.

In addition to commemorating Sangamitta Theri’s arrival, Unduvap Poya also holds significance as a time of spiritual renewal and enlightenment. It is believed that during the lifetime of Lord Buddha, he visited Sri Lanka and left his footprint on the summit of Adam’s Peak, known as Sri Pada.
