Wesak Day

commemorates the birth,
the enlightenment,
and the passing away of Lord Buddha

Every year, millions of people around the world come together to celebrate Wesak, also known as Vesak or Buddha Day.  Wesak is not only a time for Buddhists to honor the life and teachings of the Buddha but also an occasion for people of various backgrounds to reflect on the universal values of enlightenment, compassion, and inner peace.

Wesak holds profound significance in Buddhism as it marks three key events in the life of Siddhartha Gautama, who later became known as the Buddha. Firstly, it commemorates his birth in Lumbini, Nepal, over 2,500 years ago. Secondly, it celebrates his enlightenment, which occurred when he meditated under the Bodhi tree and attained Nirvana.  Lastly, Wesak also commemorates the Buddha’s death, as he achieved parinirvana at the age of 80, passing into final liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
