Honouring the Departed Ones

Idam me vo ñātinam hōtu
sukhitā hontu ñātayo

Let this merit accrue to my/our departed relatives and may they be happy.

In the tapestry of Buddhist beliefs and practices, one thread shines brightly as a beacon of compassion and filial piety: the act of transferring merits to departed relatives. Rooted in the profound understanding of interconnectedness and the cyclical nature of existence, this practice holds deep significance for many Buddhists around the world.

Central to Buddhist philosophy is the concept of karma – the law of cause and effect. Actions, whether positive or negative, have consequences that reverberate throughout existence. Merits (punya or puñña in Pali), in Buddhist terms, refers to the positive energy generated by virtuous deeds, thoughts, and intentions. It is believed that accumulating merit contributes to one’s spiritual well-being and progression towards enlightenment.

Transferring merits involves dedicating the positive energy generated from virtuous actions to benefit others, particularly those who have passed away.

In the Buddhist worldview, it is believed that such dedications can alleviate the suffering of departed souls and contribute to their spiritual progress. This act of transferring merits is rooted in the principle of interconnectedness, acknowledging the ongoing relationship between the living and the deceased.

Event Details

During the Maha Sanghika Dana ceremony, we offer food, clothing, and other necessities to Sangha (monks) in memory of our departed loved ones. Through the collective act of giving, we honor their legacy and express our gratitude for the impact they have had on our lives.

Our puja honoring the departed ones is a sacred ritual where we come together to pay homage to those who have passed away. Whether it’s a family member, friend, or ancestor, this puja allows us to express our love, gratitude, and respect for their presence in our lives.

In the spirit of compassion and loving-kindness, we also offer special sponsorship opportunities for individuals who wish to make a meaningful contribution to this puja.
